I can understand why it is an important book for Norwegian literary history and Collett employs a broad range of fascinating symbolism, but none of these come close to redeem the almost provoking boredom I felt while reading it. I probably wouldn’t have finished this if it weren’t for my project in school. The central love story was heartbreaking, and the imagery of the Norwegian countryside was just beautiful.
