I prefer doing it that way around — so that I have formed my own opinions from the books, and can use biographical information to augment my interest, rather than act as a starting point. The early sections about growing up in Edinburgh are lovely and rich with detail. Butter came from the Buttercup Dairy Company, bread rolls bought from the baker, fresh and warm from the oven.
Writing for other people caused me to describe many interesting things that I would not have bothered to jot down otherwise, while at the same time I eschewed detailing my emotions. I’m not sure muuriel I finished reading this memoir yesterday February 2, and found it interesting since the author wrote so well and clearly that we readers can understand how her literay life had developed and why.

Reading any of her work, I usually imagine it being spoken by one of those ladies of the South Side, which Muriel Spark is. And, as you said, she was an original thinker and writer. I, too, had similar slark when I wrote a novel; I just kept reaching into this great grab-bag of ideas and I had no idea where they were coming from or whether they really made any sense to anyone but me.
This autobiography was published in and throughout the book the author is writing about events that happened over 40 years ago. However, that said, I will get back to this.
However, she seemed to gloss over quite a lot of heart I am essentially completely unfamiliar with most of Currriculum works; I took this off revieew shelf because it was shelved near Death and the Maidens, and I felt like some good British-literature-author-writing over the recent rainstorms. Indeed, Spark often finishes an anecdote by mentioning which short story or novel the event helped influence.
As a result she was posted to intelligence work, helping to create and distribute anti-Nazi propaganda via fake German radio stations.

I was doing the same thing. So it’s great, after learning about all the goings on behind the scenes from Martin Stannard’s biography last year, to return front-of-house for the full performance: Her time in London working on the magazines seems to have been a trying time and she appears to have come across a lot of people who wished her ill. In fact she chose to settle in London rather than Edinburgh in order to witness the bombing.
For those that enjoy Muriel Spark’s writing style, this is an excellent, very entertaining book.
